Starting January 5, 2021: High School Geology – Practical Geology, Live Online Class

Would you like some help teaching geology to your high school student? Patrick Nurre of Northwest Treasures is offering a *LIVE* interactive online class, High School Geology – Practical Geology, designed for your high school student (grades 9-12). Fourteen weeks, beginning January 5, 2021.

For: High School (Grades 9-12)

Credit: 1 semester credit. It is up to the parent to determine the standards for credit that exist in their state. Combined with Introduction to Biblical Geology, this creates one full year of science credit in geology/earth science.

Prerequisites: None.

Course description: Fourteen one-hour weekly classes. Practical geology – understanding how to interpret rock types, rock layers, landforms, fossil positions, and basic language of stratigraphic geology. Student will learn geological terminology in studying landforms and the rock strata, basic rock and mineral structure, the differences in secular and Biblical classification, and how the Genesis Flood affects the way a geologist looks at the geology of the Earth. Course will also include study of fossils, including dinosaur bones, radiometric dating, and cave men. Students will be able to interact with the instructor either via chat or in real-time discussion.

Required materials:

  1. Rocks and Minerals: The Stuff of the Earth (provided by instructor)
  2. Fossils, Dinosaurs and Cave Men (provided by teacher)
  3. Over 90 rock, mineral, and fossil specimens, and Mohs hardness test kit (provided by teacher, see pictures above and list below*)
  4. Bible
  5. 3-ring binder (for printed assignments/handouts and notetaking)
  6. High-speed internet
  7. Computer/phone/ipad with camera  (for live classes)
  8. Printer

Program of Study:

Part 1 (2 weeks) – Crucial definitions in establishing the correct science in geology

Part 2 (7 weeks) – Geological projects exploring real-life formations and applying our Biblical Framework

Part 3 (5 weeks) – The interpretation of fossils, dinosaur bones, and radiometric dating

Expectations/homework/grading:

  1. 14 hours of lecture and discussion
  2. Grade will be based on class attendance, discussion participation, completion of homework assignments, quizzes, and tests.
  3. Students will be expected to spend 3-4 hours per week in homework, studying for quizzes and tests, completion of geological projects, essays, research, and recording in their lab books.

Parent will need to be available, occasionally, to proctor quizzes/tests.

When: Tuesdays, at 9:45 am PST (12:45 pm EST, 11:45 am CST, 10:45 am MST – no classes on February 16 and April 6)

Start date: January 5, 2021 (no classes on February 16 and April 6)

End date: April 20, 2021

  • 30 fossils samples (dinosaur bone, fossil clam, fossil fish, fossil sea urchin, permineralized wood, spinosaurus bone, megalodon tooth, limestone with fossils, fossil gastropod, fossil mammoth bone, fossil algae, gastrolith, ammonite, belemnite, brachiopod, crinoid stems, worm tube, crinoid head and blastoid, cast/mold, mudstone, fossil fern, shark vertebra, mosasaur bone, fossil insect, fossil wood, opalized wood, fossil sponge, fossil coral, fossil bryozoa, and fossil protozoa)

  • 13 sedimentary rocks (shale, siltstone, sandstone, breccia, arkose, conglomerate, limestone, travertine, coquina, fossil limestone, chalk, halite, bituminous coal)
  • 9 volcanic rocks (basalt, rhyolite, dacite, andesite, obsidian, scoria, pumice, tuff, vesicular basalt)
  • 8 mineral samples showing crystal habits
