How do I know which geology study to get?

How do I know which Geology Study to get?

We get asked this question all the time! “How do I know which geology study to get?”  There are so many things to consider like the age of your kids. Or how many kids you have. Or maybe they have special interests. So where to start?

Age of your Children

The most obvious place to start would be with the age of your children. Our studies and kits are grouped roughly into three groups:

  • PreK-3rd
  • 4th-8th grades
  • High Schoool

If this is your main consideration, then simply go to our home page, and click on “Explore Resources by Grade or Subject” just underneath the banner. When you do that, you will just need to click on the appropriate grade level, and off you go!

“But I have lots of kids in so many different grades!”

Not to worry! We have three kits that are easy to combine, which will save you money and time!

  • Geology for Little Eyes and Geology for Kids cover many of the same areas. The difference would be that Geology for Kids covers things in more depth. And you will find extra sections on the Ice Age, Oceans that aren’t found in the Geology for Little Eyes. Geology for Little Eyes will have more hands-on projects that young kids like so much. In addition, the two kits also have almost identical samples. So the way that these two studies can help you is pretty straightforward. If you have kids that span those two ranges, then we would suggest that you get either one of the kits, and then purchase the book(s) for the other level. For instance, you could purchase Geology for Little Eyes Kit, and add to it Geology for Kids Book. Or you could do the reverse: Purchase the Geology for Kids Kit, and add on the three books that are in the Geology for Little Eys Kit – Rocks and Minerals for Little Eyes, Fossils and Dinosaurs for Little Eyes, and Volcanoes for Little Eyes. When you do these studies with your children, you would just be sure that you pick the same subject from the textbooks, to keep everybody together.
  • Rock Identification Made Easy Kit is another of our very popular kits. And if you already own Geology for Little Eyes or Geology for Kids, then you already have all the samples you would need to complete the study. So you don’t need to buy the complete kit, but just the Rock Identification Made Easy book
  • The samples from Rocks and Minerals for Little Eyes easily fit with Rock Identification Made Easy, and vice versa!
  • The samples from our high school kit, Rocks and Minerals the Stuff of the Earth  can also combine with our Rock Identification Made Easy book.
  • The samples from our high school kit Bedrock Geology can be used with Geology for Kids book. The samples in this case won’t be as complete, but it gives you quite a few of them.

So to sum up:

  1. For Gr. PreK-8, Geology for Kids Kit + Rocks and Minerals for Little Eyes book, Fossils and Dinosaurs for Little Eyes book, and Volcanoes for Little Eyes book
  2. For Gr. PreK-8, Geology for Little Eyes Kit + Geology for Kids book

Special Interests

When you study geology, it is not necessary that you start with any of these kits that I have mentioned. You can jump in with a special interest, like Mining and the Geology of the Old West. Or Dinosaurs. Or maybe they like history? Geology and the Old West Trails. Any of these kits are going to help them on their way to learning more about our fascinating world from a geological perspective. Again, on our web site, just click on the button at the top of the page that says “Explore Resources by Grade or Subject.” There will be a complete listing there of all the different areas of study that you can explore.

The Most Important Thing…

But there is one thing that we have not talked about. And that is that your children can learn to defend their faith when they study geology. This is the most important thing in all of their studies. You want your child, above all, to be able to communicate the living hope they have in a risen Savior, and to be able to stand on the truth of all of the Scriptures. With that in mind, we would strongly suggest that geology is not a “One and Done” type of subject. It is not just about getting the academics of geology down. It is about helping to set your child’s worldview. So you should find time to revisit this subject often.

There are so many areas that can be studied in geology, from volcanoes, to minerals, to dinosaurs, to national park geology, to state geology, fossils, archaeology, just so much! But all of our studies will ultimately drive your child to consider, again, the truth of the Scriptures.
